E5 means the scanner is not working
An E5 code identifies a scanner problem; it does not by itself identify a failed component. The source discusses this limited troubleshooting situation. It does not demonstrate a repaired scanner.
Step 1:Cancel and try one scan again
Press Cancel on the printer and try the scan again. Read any message in the app you are using. Keep the same simple original so you can tell whether the scan actually completes.
Step 2:Restart if scanning still fails
Turn the printer off, then turn it on again and retry. HP’s E5 procedure does not specify the recording’s ten-second unplug instruction, so no timed unplug or general reset is required here.
Step 3:If E5 remains, stop and seek model-specific support
Record E5 and the exact printer model for HP support. Do not open the scanner assembly. Printing can still work when scanning does not, but that is not evidence that the scanner error is fixed. Warranty eligibility depends on your actual product and coverage.
