Before you start
- A flashlight and a stable surface with room to access the printer.
Try Cancel, then locate the trapped paper
E4 indicates a possible paper jam. Press Cancel once to let the printer try to clear it. If E4 remains, check the accessible paper path. The recordings show the front cartridge area, rear input path and the bottom access door; HP also identifies the output tray.
Step 1:Check the input and output trays
Remove loose paper from the input tray. Look for a trapped sheet or torn scraps at the input and output openings. If a sheet is accessible, pull gently and evenly with both hands rather than tugging one corner. Leave the input-tray shield attached.
Step 2:Disconnect power before checking inside
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop. Turn the printer off and disconnect the power cord and other cables before reaching into the cartridge area. Use a flashlight to locate scraps; avoid forcing the carriage or pulling internal plastic parts. Close the access door after removing accessible paper.
Step 3:Inspect the bottom access door if needed
With power still disconnected, remove loose input paper and close the input tray, output tray and extender. Hold the scanner lid and trays closed. Rest the printer on its rear to reach the base, as shown in HP’s 2900 manual; do not let the lid fall open.
Release the two tabs on the bottom access door. Remove accessible jammed paper and check for torn fragments with a flashlight. Push the door closed until both tabs click, then return the printer upright.
Step 4:Reconnect and check for a normal feed
Reconnect cables, turn on the printer and reload suitable paper. Check whether E4 clears before retrying the job. The presenter reports a cleared E4 at the end of both recordings; your result must be checked on your own printer.
If no jam is visible or E4 returns
An E4 can persist without an obvious whole sheet in the path. Check that the bottom door is fully latched and that no scraps remain. Use HP’s model-specific jam guidance or support if the error returns; this guide does not add a factory reset as a universal cure.
