A little preparation

Before you start

  • Initial printer setup completed. If HP+ is activated, retain the Internet connectivity required for that printer.
  • An ENVY 6100e-series touchscreen printer and an iPhone with the document already available.
  • Paper and ink ready if you intend to send a print job.

Know which connection you are making

Wi-Fi Direct connects the phone to the printer’s own network. It is useful when you are not using a shared router, but that printer network does not provide Internet access. Cellular data may still work depending on the phone; do not depend on downloading a document after switching networks.

Wi-Fi Direct is a local connection method, not an exemption from HP+ requirements. HP says activated HP+ printers require Internet connectivity; keep that requirement in place rather than treating Direct as a permanent offline setup.

Step 1:Enable Wi-Fi Direct

Open Menu → Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Direct and turn it on. Read any setup-mode warning before confirming. The source warns that enabling Direct ends the automatic Wi-Fi setup mode then in progress; Direct is a different connection path from joining a home router.

Step 2:Read the printer’s Direct name and password

On that Wi-Fi Direct screen, choose View Details. Note the exact DIRECT name and its password. Use your printer’s displayed values, not the example password in the recording. HP also documents those details on the Network Configuration Report.

Step 3:Join that network from the iPhone

Open the iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings, select the matching DIRECT printer network and enter its Wi-Fi Direct password. Keep that connection active while using this direct printing path. A no-Internet notice is expected for this connection; it is not the same as a failed printer join.

Step 4:Select the printer for your document

Open the document in Files and use Share → Print. Choose the ENVY from the printer list, check the page range and copies, then Print when ready. The source demonstrates discovery in this list; it does not establish a finished printed page. Check your own output rather than treating discovery as completion.

The recording also adds the connected printer in the HP app. Availability of individual app services is separate from this local Direct connection.

Reconnect to your usual network afterward

When finished, return the phone to its usual Wi-Fi network. Leaving DIRECT ends the direct path; a later print needs either that Direct connection again or a separately configured shared-network connection.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

The phone says this network has no Internet.

DIRECT is a local printer connection, not an Internet router. Keep the document available locally and return to normal Wi-Fi when you need that network again.

The printer is missing after I returned to home Wi-Fi.

You left its Direct network. Rejoin DIRECT for this method, or finish setting up the printer on the same home network as the phone.
