Before you start
- A powered HP DeskJet 2920 with initial paper and cartridge setup complete.
- An iPhone connected to the home Wi-Fi you want the printer to join, with Bluetooth enabled and the official HP app.
- Your current Wi-Fi name and password if requested; a Mac on that network for the optional final section.
Check whether setup is needed
Use this for a printer that needs to join your home network. If its Wi-Fi light is already steady and it appears in the HP app from that network, skip restoring wireless settings. You can add the Mac directly using the final section.
The source uses an iPhone first, then a Mac. It does not prove that all operating systems have identical screens. Your printer and phone should end up on the same home Wi-Fi.
A blinking wireless light can mean setup mode or an attempt to connect; use the accompanying wireless symbol and app message as well. If the light is off, press Wi-Fi to enable wireless before considering a reset. A steady light shows a network connection, not necessarily a finished registration or print job.
Step 1:Restore setup mode only for a new connection
HP’s exact 2900-series manual specifies holding Cancel and Wi-Fi together for three seconds to restore network settings. Release and check for the blue Wi-Fi light blinking with the signal bars cycling. If setup mode simply timed out, HP says to try the Wi-Fi button first; reset only if necessary. The source recordings give different hold durations, so use the model-specific instructions here.
Step 2:Find the printer in the HP app
With the iPhone on your intended home Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, open the official HP app. Choose Add device → Set up and connect a new printer → Launch setup. Select the DeskJet when it appears.
Allow the device-discovery permissions requested for setup. Check that you are selecting your own printer, especially if more than one device appears.
Step 3:Confirm the home Wi-Fi and Information button
- Check the Wi-Fi name offered by the app and confirm the intended network. The recorded iPhone transfers its saved Wi-Fi details without a typed password; follow your prompt if a password is requested.
- Wait for the accessory/network setup to complete and choose Done.
- When the app requests it, press and release the printer’s flashing Information button. Wait for the app to continue.
Step 4:Distinguish network connection from account registration
In this session the printer joins Wi-Fi but the later account-registration step fails. The presenter uses Exit setup and can then access the printer in the app. This does not mean every setup error should be skipped: first confirm the steady blue wireless light and the completed network step.
Read optional data-sharing, subscription and account choices individually. They are not the same as entering the home network credentials.
If ordinary app discovery fails
First confirm Bluetooth and device-discovery permissions, the intended home network and the printer’s setup state. Move the phone closer. The additional blinking-light recording’s iPhone accessory setup does not finish successfully; that failure is retained rather than presented as a dependable alternative.
The presenter then uses the printer’s Direct connection to reach its local settings. On this model, enable Direct if needed by holding Wi-Fi and Resume for three seconds; its Direct icon appears. With paper loaded, press Information and Resume together to print the Direct guide. Join the named DIRECT network from the iPhone using its printed password, then add the existing printer in the HP app.
Open the printer’s Settings → Advanced Settings, then Network → Wireless → Wireless Setup Wizard. Confirm you are opening your own printer’s local page before entering its admin PIN or changed password. Do not assume an arbitrary browser warning is harmless. Select the home network and enter the router password.
After the printer connects, return the phone to home Wi-Fi and add the existing printer from that network. The source’s wizard screen remains on Connecting even after the printer’s light turns steady; the presenter verifies recovery by rediscovering it from home Wi-Fi. Use that independent connection check instead of treating a stalled wizard as a completed result.
Step 5:Add a Mac after the printer joins Wi-Fi
Put the Mac on the same home network. Open the official HP app, choose Add device → Choose an available printer, select the DeskJet and choose Add printer. The source demonstrates it appearing in that list after the phone setup.
To check your own installation, select this printer for a small document and confirm a physical page prints. The source’s app discovery is not a guarantee that every later print job will succeed.
Questions & troubleshooting
The app says it cannot register the printer to an account.
That specific failure occurs after Wi-Fi connection in the source. The presenter uses Exit setup and finds the printer in the app. Check the completed network step and steady wireless light before treating your message as the same case; an earlier connection failure is different.
The blue Wi-Fi light is off.
Wireless is disabled. The Wi-Fi button switches wireless on or off. Turn it on if you intend to use Wi-Fi, allow it to reconnect and recheck the light before clearing saved settings.
The Mac cannot find it.
Confirm the phone completed the home-network connection and that the Mac uses the same network. Add it as an available printer once connected; starting another new network is not required.
