Before you start
- A printer with its initial ink and paper setup completed.
- The official HP app installed before joining the printer’s local network.
Understand the local connection
Wi-Fi Direct connects the phone to the printer’s own wireless network. It is a different path from joining the printer to your home router. Your phone may show no Internet while connected to the printer, so install the app and obtain the file you need first. The source demonstrates an iPhone; exact app and iOS versions are not recorded.
Step 1:Check the Wi-Fi Direct icon
If the Direct icon is off, hold Wireless and Resume together for three seconds to turn Direct on. Check that its icon appears. The same pair toggles it off, so do not repeat it if Direct is already enabled. This does not require the Wireless + Cancel network reset shown in the source.
Step 2:Print this printer’s Wi-Fi Direct guide
With paper loaded, press Information and Resume together. Use the resulting guide to identify the printer’s Direct network and connection details. Do not assume that a password spoken in another demonstration is yours.
Step 3:Join the printer from iPhone Wi-Fi settings
Open Settings → Wi-Fi on the iPhone. Choose the Direct network that identifies your DeskJet and enter its own password if requested. If the printer requests confirmation with the Information light and a rapidly blinking Direct icon, press Information as HP instructs.
Step 4:Select the printer in the HP app
Return to the HP app, choose Add an existing printer and select the DeskJet it discovers. Open the intended document or photo, check the printer, paper and colour options, and submit the print job.
Step 5:Check the sheet, then return to your normal Wi-Fi
Inspect the actual output to confirm the job completed. The recording reaches job submission; it is not proof that every connection or test print succeeds. When finished, reconnect the phone to its normal Wi-Fi. Losing access to the Direct-only printer after leaving its network is expected; use the home Wi-Fi setup guide if you want ongoing access from your home network.
Questions & troubleshooting
The printer’s network is missing.
Check that the separate Wi-Fi Direct icon is on and that you are near the printer. Use its printed Direct guide to identify the correct name. Do not clear a working router connection merely to turn Direct on.
The phone accepts the connection but the HP app cannot find the printer.
Check that the phone is still joined to the printer’s own network and that Add an existing printer has selected this DeskJet. A blue router-connection light is not proof that the phone is using Wi-Fi Direct.
