A little preparation

Before you start

  • Printer on and idle, with installed cartridges and unused plain A4 or Letter paper.

Choose the page you need

The source demonstrates a Printer Status Report: a useful record of printer information and estimated ink. It is distinct from HP’s hardware Test Page and network reports, which use different buttons.

Step 1:Load paper and let the printer become idle

Load unused plain A4 or Letter paper and open the output tray and its extension. Check that cartridges are installed and the printer is switched on. Wait for the current operation to finish so Cancel does not simply stop that job.

Step 2:Hold Cancel for three seconds

Press and hold the X-shaped Cancel button for three seconds, then release it. Wait for the Printer Status Report to finish printing. This is a hold, rather than the brief press used to stop an active operation.

Step 3:Read the status report

Use the page’s printer identification and status information when checking the correct model or asking for support. Its estimated ink levels are not a guarantee of remaining page yield. The source page is in German; the language of your page can differ.

For a separate hardware Test Page, HP specifies holding Power, pressing and releasing Cancel, then releasing Power. For a Network Configuration Page and Wireless Test Results, press Wireless and Information together. Choose only the report relevant to your problem.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Pressing X stopped a job instead.

A brief Cancel press stops the current operation. Let the printer become idle, then hold Cancel for the three-second status-report command.

Does this require a working Wi-Fi connection?

The status-report button works on the printer itself. Printing the page is not proof that your phone or computer can reach the printer.
