Before you start
- Clean plain paper of the size selected in the print job.
- For roller cleaning only: flashlight, cotton swab and water; power disconnected.
Start with the stack and the actual error
An out-of-paper message with sheets in the tray does not necessarily mean the printer is empty. The stack can be damaged, the guide can obstruct it or the pickup rollers can need cleaning. Read the actual display: a jam or another error needs its own checks.
The recording explains loading and roller access but does not show a final successful feed test.
Step 1:Remove and reload a sound stack
Wait for printing to stop, then remove the paper. Use clean, flat sheets of one size and type, with their edges aligned. Raise the rear support, move the width guide left and load the paper print-side up without pushing it hard into the mechanism. Bring the guide right until it touches the stack without bending it.
Lower the output tray and extend its support. Confirm that the job’s paper size and type match the loaded paper, then try one page before taking the next step.
Step 2:Inspect the rear feed opening
If the problem remains, switch the printer off and unplug the power cord and other cables before reaching inside. Remove the paper, raise the input tray and lift and hold its shield. Use a flashlight to look for paper fragments or another visible obstruction. Do not remove the shield or force tools into the mechanism.
Step 3:Clean the gray pickup rollers
HP’s 2600 instructions identify gray paper-pick rollers below the input opening. Lightly moisten a cotton swab with water and squeeze out excess liquid. Wipe the rollers while rotating them upward with your fingers, using moderate pressure to remove dirt. Do not pour water into the printer.
Step 4:Reconnect and check a real page
Reconnect the cables, switch on and reload the flat stack. Try a short print and check that it feeds without the same error. If it still fails, follow the additional checks on HP’s model-specific out-of-paper page or arrange service. The recording’s suggestion to discard the printer is not a diagnosis.
Questions & troubleshooting
Should the guide squeeze the paper?
No. It should touch the edge while the stack remains flat. A bowed stack can prevent pickup.
Can I reconnect immediately after wiping the rollers?
Wait until the rollers are completely dry. HP gives approximately 10 minutes for this procedure.
