Try the least disruptive check
E4 with a blinking Resume light indicates a paper-jam condition. HP notes that jams can also be falsely reported. Press Cancel once to let the printer try to clear the job. Wait for movement to stop. If the error clears and the sheet exits, check it for damage and try again; do not open the printer while parts are moving.
Step 1:Check input and output access
If E4 remains, turn off and unplug the printer before manual handling. Remove loose paper. Lift and hold the rear input-tray shield and inspect that area with a flashlight. Gently remove accessible jammed paper with both hands so it does not tear. Look in the output area too; remove reachable paper without forcing it or pushing tools into the path.
Step 2:Inspect the cartridge-access area
With power still disconnected, open the front output door and inner cartridge-access door. If the carriage is in the centre and moves freely, slide it to the right. Do not force it if it is locked or stuck. Remove accessible paper and search for torn fragments, leaving delicate strips and other mechanisms undisturbed.
Step 3:Use the underside cleanout only if needed
Keep power disconnected. Lower the paper input tray, close the output extender and the exterior door. Hold the scanner lid and input tray in place as you carefully turn the printer onto its side, as HP specifies.
Release the two tabs to open the underside cleanout door. Remove accessible jammed paper and fragments carefully, then close the door until both tabs latch. Return the printer to its normal upright position. Reopen the cartridge-access door and use a flashlight to check for loose objects that shifted while the printer was on its side; remove accessible obstructions, then close the door before reconnecting power. Do not turn the printer upside down as shown in the recordings.
Step 4:Reconnect and check for a remaining error
Close the cartridge-access door and other covers, reconnect power and turn on. Reload undamaged paper of one size and type, with the guides touching the edges without bending it. If the printer asks you to continue, press Resume after the obstruction is cleared, then try one job.
If E4 returns without visible paper
Look again for small torn pieces and an unlatched cleanout door. Do not repeat an unexplained button combination or force inaccessible parts. HP’s model-specific page includes further carriage and feed checks; use that reference or HP support if the path is clear and E4 persists. The source’s tour is not proof that every jam is repairable at home.
