Before you start
- A working fax-compatible telephone service, suitable cord/adapter and confirmed recipient fax number.
- The named fdw variant with fax ports, completed basic printer setup, toner and plain paper.
Use a real fax connection
This guide covers the printer’s telephone-line fax, not the HP app’s separate Mobile Fax service. Connect a suitable telephone cord from the working phone service to the port marked Fax on the rear. Identify the marked port, not just a camera-relative top/bottom position; the additional telephone-extension port is a different connection.
HP specifies a minimum 26 AWG phone cord and notes that a regional adapter may be required. A shared voice line, DSL filter, PBX or Internet telephone adapter needs its applicable setup from the manual/service provider; do not choose the dedicated-line option merely to dismiss the wizard. Wi-Fi alone is not a telephone fax connection.
Step 1:Complete the fax setup
On Home, swipe to Fax and choose Continue if initial setup is incomplete. The documented settings route is Menu → Settings under Utilities → Fax Settings → Fax Setup. Choose the correct country/region, enter your real Fax Header Name and your sending Fax Number, then continue.
Answer the shared-line question for your actual installation and follow the corresponding setup prompts. Review the displayed details and finish with OK. The header identifies the sender; the recipient’s number is entered later and must not be substituted into your own header.
Step 2:Check setup before sending a document
Load full-size plain paper and make sure toner cartridges are installed. Go to Menu → Tools under Utilities → Troubleshooting → Fax → Fax Test Report. Print and read the report.
If a check fails, follow the reported fault and the manual’s applicable phone-service setup. A passing setup test checks the fax installation; it does not establish that a particular recipient has received a document.
Step 3:Load the original and confirm the recipient
For one page, place the original face down at the rear-left glass mark and close the lid. For multiple pages, open the feeder output extender, load supported originals print-side up until detected and fit the width guides. Avoid feeding photographs.
On Home, swipe right to Fax. Enter the intended recipient’s fax number or select the correct address-book entry, then Select to confirm. Check every digit before proceeding. Review original sides, resolution and any needed page-size option; match one- or two-sided originals rather than assuming the default.
Touch Send. Let scanning and the call finish, following any prompt for another glass original. Do not repeatedly send while a job is still dialling.
Step 4:Confirm the outcome
Read the final send result. To inspect a recorded outcome, open Menu → Tools under Utilities → Reports → Fax Reports, select Fax Call Report or Fax Activity Log and Print. Check the intended number, time and successful/failed status.
For important documents, confirm legible receipt with the intended recipient. If the call fails, use the actual report reason to check the recipient, telephone service or fax setup. Hearing dial tones or seeing the document feed is not delivery confirmation.
