Use the priority slot for one sheet
Tray 1 is the single-sheet priority slot. It is different from the lower multi-sheet Tray 2 and from the scanner’s document feeder on top. Do not put a stack into Tray 1.
Use flat, supported paper and wait until the printer is not already printing before loading. This procedure covers an ordinary single-sided sheet; preprinted paper for a duplex job can require the opposite face orientation.
Step 1:Position the sheet and guides
Move the Tray 1 width guides outward. Position the sheet’s top edge at the slot. For ordinary one-sided printing, put the side to be printed facing up, with its top edge leading into the printer.
Adjust the guides so they lightly touch the sides without bending the sheet. The guides hold paper straight; they do not replace selecting the actual paper size and type in software.
Step 2:Let the printer take the sheet
Insert the single sheet and hold it while the printer draws it partway into the paper path. Support a larger sheet with both hands if needed, then let the printer hold it. Do not push extra sheets in behind it.
Step 3:Print with matching settings
In the application’s print dialog, select this printer and the actual paper size and type. Choose Tray 1 or the appropriate priority-feed source where offered, then print. Let the sheet finish before loading another.
For a longer ordinary job, use the supported multi-sheet tray instead. The source’s claim that a manual-feed job never times out is not a guaranteed setting on every printer or driver.
If paper will not feed
Read the control-panel message and check that only one supported sheet is loaded with the guides fitted correctly. If paper is jammed, follow HP’s location-specific jam instructions rather than pushing tools through the slot.
