A little preparation

Before you start

  • A compatible iPhone/iPad or Android device with Epson Smart Panel, the intended Wi-Fi network name and current password, and access to the printer administrator password if requested.
  • XP-2205 uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Your router must offer a compatible 2.4 GHz network; a dual-band router can still provide one.

Step 1:Connect your phone and open Smart Panel

Connect the phone to the home network you intend to use. Turn the printer on and install Epson Smart Panel from the genuine store link on Epson’s XP-2205 support page. Check the current store compatibility for your device; the source’s older iPhone does not prove support for every phone.

Read the setup terms and allow the local-network/device-discovery permissions requested for finding the printer. Bluetooth or location prompts depend on the operating system and setup stage. Optional notifications or data sharing are separate choices.

Step 2:Select the correct printer

Choose Set up a new product and continue the discovery prompts. Select your printer; the app may show the software-family name XP-2200 Series. If it is already on the network, use the option for a product already connected rather than starting another network setup.

If discovery fails, check power, proximity, the app’s local-network permissions and the selected network, then retry. The source succeeded after restarting and reinstalling, but its claimed failure frequency is not measured evidence and reinstalling is not the first required step.

Step 3:Enter the printer administrator password if asked

When Smart Panel requests the printer administrator password, use the current password. For an unchanged printer, check its PASSWORD label; Epson says to use the serial number without surrounding asterisks if no password label exists. See the linked password guide for location. Do not put the router’s Wi-Fi password into this administrator prompt.

Step 4:Confirm the network and enter its Wi-Fi password

Proceed to Wi-Fi connection settings. Check that the displayed network name is the intended one, then enter that network’s current Wi-Fi password. A router label is useful only if its default password has not been changed. Confirm and wait while the printer joins.

The upper router-network lamp should become steadily lit, and the app should report that the smartphone and product are connected. The lower Wi-Fi Direct lamp alone is not proof of a router connection. The phone helps configure the printer; it does not need to remain a relay for future computer printing.

Step 5:If the router or password changed

Use Smart Panel’s setup/reconfiguration process or Epson Setup Navi to enter the new network details. Epson documents reconfiguration when the network changes; deleting all network settings is not an automatic prerequisite.

If you deliberately choose the source’s reset route, first read the linked network-reset guide: it removes the current configuration and disables Wi-Fi. After the reset, repeat the setup above with the new details. A reset by itself cannot join the new network.

Step 6:Confirm the connection before adding another device

Check that Smart Panel shows your printer and its status. A computer must join the same reachable local network and have its own printer/scanner setup completed. Use the linked Windows or Mac guide for that next step. If the network name is uncertain, load paper and hold Network information for at least five seconds to print the status sheet.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Do I need a smartphone permanently?

No. This method uses a phone for setup. Epson also documents computer setup and WPS; the printer communicates directly with the configured router afterward.

Is a network reset required for every connection failure?

No. Check the network report, permissions and current credentials first. Reset only when you intend to discard the saved network configuration.

Can I use only a 5 GHz network?

The XP-2205 wireless specification is 2.4 GHz. Use a supported network supplied by your router rather than assuming that a 5 GHz-only service is compatible.
