A little preparation

Before you start

  • Enough ink for a reliable pattern and A4/Letter plain paper. A working Canon PRINT connection is needed only for the optional app method.

Check ink and a nozzle pattern first

Match the paper and quality settings to the job and check the ink status. A cartridge that has run out of ink needs replacement, and a new cartridge must have its protective tape removed and locking lever secured.

Load A4 or Letter plain paper in the rear tray, printable side facing you; fit the guide gently and extend the output tray. Press Setup until 1 appears, then Black or Color to print the nozzle check. Wait for it to finish and compare the grid and colour bands with Canon’s diagrams.

Missing grid lines, white horizontal streaks or absent colour call for cleaning. A normal pattern does not justify a maintenance cycle merely because the source shows one.

Step 1:Run ordinary cleaning with Setup code 2

With the printer on, press Setup until the LCD shows 2. Press either Black or Color. Do not operate other controls during the cycle; wait until the ON lamp stops flashing and stays lit.

Print another nozzle pattern with Setup 1 and Black or Color. Compare it with the previous sheet. Stop if the pattern is now complete. If it is still deficient, perform one more ordinary cleaning and another check.

Step 2:Alternative: start the same cleaning from Canon PRINT

In the source’s phone app, select the connected printer, open Utilities and choose Start Cleaning. This is an alternative way to request cleaning, not an extra cycle to run after the panel method for its own sake. Allow the task to finish and check a nozzle pattern afterwards.

The presenter opens this menu but deliberately does not run a second cycle in the app. The video therefore demonstrates the panel cycle and the app entry point, not a completed second app cleaning or proven recovery.

Step 3:Escalate only after two unsuccessful ordinary cycles

If both ordinary cleaning-and-check cycles fail, select Setup code 3 and press Black or Color for Deep Cleaning. Wait until the ON lamp stays lit, then print and inspect another nozzle pattern.

If quality remains poor, turn the printer off normally and leave the power cord connected for more than 24 hours before repeating Deep Cleaning, as Canon’s current troubleshooting sequence specifies. Inspect another pattern afterwards. If the second deep clean fails, replace the relevant FINE cartridge; if replacement also fails, contact Canon.
