Before you start
- The printer should be on with its cartridges installed and covers closed. You do not need to open the covers just to view ink information.
Step 1:Open the remaining-ink screen
- Press Setup. Use left/right to select Ink information, then press OK.
- Check that Remaining ink is selected, then press OK again.
- Read the displayed indicators for the installed colour and black cartridges.
Canon also shows the current remaining-ink indication briefly when COPY or FAX is pressed. The dedicated Ink information menu gives you a deliberate route to inspect it.
Step 2:Read the indicator with any warning
A low-ink mark means you should prepare a compatible new cartridge. Canon warns that continuing with low ink may affect output quality. The presenter’s half-colour/almost-empty-black example is one printer’s state, not a percentage measurement for your cartridge.
If the LCD shows an error rather than an ordinary low-ink indication, read its message or support code. A cartridge-recognition fault does not necessarily mean that the physical ink has simply run out.
Step 3:Choose the action that matches the evidence
Use the replacement guide when the cartridge needs changing, and confirm the exact model’s regional supply number. A used cartridge may not give a reliable replacement indication; Canon explicitly warns about that limitation.
If the indicator looks adequate but a colour is missing, use a nozzle check before choosing maintenance. Do not reset the printer or disable monitoring merely to make a displayed level look full.
Questions & troubleshooting
Do I have to open the printer to read the ink level?
No. The source briefly checks installed cartridges, but the LCD route itself does not require opening covers.
Is the bar an exact remaining page count?
No exact page count or measured percentage is established here. Use the displayed warning and actual print symptoms.
Why can a used cartridge give an unreliable indication?
Canon warns that with an installed used FINE cartridge, the printer may not properly inform you when it needs replacement.
