Before you start
- Check the exact printer model and country before obtaining ink. Canon Canada lists PG-240/CL-241 for MG3620; Canon UK lists PG-540/CL-541 for MG3650. These regional supply numbers are not interchangeable merely because the installation mechanism is similar.
- Have a compatible new cartridge ready. Do not touch its electrical contacts or nozzle surface.
Confirm the cartridge before opening it
Use Canon’s regional compatibility lookup for the model printed on the device. The MG3620 entry in Canon Canada’s finder lists PG-240 black and CL-241 colour; Canon UK’s MG3650 page lists PG-540 black and CL-541 colour. Check the permitted standard/XL variant there rather than guessing from the shape.
Step 1:Open the cover and let the holder stop
- Turn the printer on. Open the front cover and paper output tray, then open the paper output cover.
- Wait for the cartridge holder to reach its replacement position and stop completely. The head cover opens automatically.
- If the head cover has closed, close and reopen the paper output cover to let the mechanism reposition. Do not pull the head cover open or force the holder by hand.
Step 2:Remove and replace the required cartridge
- Push the empty cartridge’s locking lever down until it clicks, then remove that cartridge. Colour belongs in the left slot; black belongs in the right.
- Unpack the compatible new cartridge and gently remove its protective tape. Keep fingers away from contacts and nozzles, and do not reattach the tape.
- Insert it straight into its slot until it reaches the back, without striking the electrical contacts.
- Raise the locking lever until it clicks. Check that the cartridge is secure. Both the colour and black cartridges must be installed for printing.
Step 3:Close, wait and check the next print
- Close the paper output cover. If an Alarm appears, read the complete lamp pattern or connected-device support code before choosing a remedy.
- For printing, keep the input paper correctly loaded and the output tray, extension and support open. Closing the entire front/output assembly is a storage position, not the finished printing setup.
- Start the intended print and allow the automatic cleaning after replacement to finish without interruption.
- Check the page. If ruled lines are misaligned, use the alignment procedure; if areas are missing or colours are faint, use a nozzle check to diagnose the pattern.
Questions & troubleshooting
The holder moved away while I was changing ink. What now?
Canon says that leaving the paper output cover open for more than ten minutes can park the holder at the right and light Alarm. Close and reopen that cover; wait for movement to stop instead of pulling the holder back.
Can I force the inner head cover open?
No. It opens automatically. Close and reopen the paper output cover if necessary; forcing the head cover can cause a malfunction.
Does changing ink always require this printer’s alignment routine?
Canon directs alignment when printed lines are misaligned or similar symptoms remain. Allow the automatic post-replacement cleaning to complete, then assess the actual print.
Can I buy the numbers shown in the video poster?
Do not use that poster as compatibility evidence. Check the exact regional Canon listing; this article distinguishes MG3620’s listed PG-240/CL-241 from MG3650’s listed PG-540/CL-541.
