Prepare before leaving your usual Wi-Fi
Finish the printer’s initial setup and load plain paper. Download the official HP app and the document you want to print before switching networks: the printer’s DIRECT network does not provide internet access.
This method connects a device directly to the printer. It does not join the printer to your home router. The demonstrated device is an iPhone; another operating system may present different connection and printing screens.
Step 1:Check the separate Wi-Fi Direct icon
Look for the Wi-Fi Direct icon on the printer display. If it is already on, leave it enabled. If it is off, hold Information for 5 seconds until the control-panel buttons light, then press Wi-Fi and Resume together.
The combination toggles Wi-Fi Direct, so check the icon after pressing it instead of repeating the combination blindly. The ordinary blue router-Wi-Fi light is a separate indicator and does not by itself prove Wi-Fi Direct is enabled.
Step 2:Print the printer’s actual connection details
Press Information once in the normal control-panel state to print the information page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct network name and password. Use the details from your own sheet; never copy credentials visible in someone else’s video.
For the dedicated Wi-Fi Direct guide, first hold Information for 5 seconds to enter support mode, then press Information and Cancel together. HP documents that this guide includes the network name and password. Keep these printed credentials private.
Step 3:Join the matching DIRECT network
On the iPhone, open Wi-Fi settings and select the DIRECT network matching the printed name. Enter the printed Wi-Fi Direct password. This is different from your home-router password or the printer’s default administrator PIN.
Wait for the phone to join. If the password is rejected, compare the entry carefully with your own current guide and check that the selected network name matches. A no-internet message can be expected on this local printer connection.
Step 4:Discover the printer and verify a print
Open the HP app, choose Add device and add an existing printer on the current connection. The recording shows the Smart Tank appearing there and in the iPhone print selector.
Open your document, select the correct printer, check paper/settings and send a short job. Inspect the result yourself: the recording demonstrates discovery but does not show a completed direct test print. Rejoin home Wi-Fi afterward for its usual internet connection; the direct path ends when you leave the DIRECT network.
