A little preparation

Before you start

  • Space to open the access doors and remove the input and output trays.
  • A flashlight to check for small paper fragments.

Start with the jam location and the screen message

A printer-paper jam and a document-feeder jam use different access points. Read the touchscreen message or its clearing animation first. This source tours the accessible areas of the printer; it does not show a jammed page being removed or a successful test print afterward.

Open the front door, then raise the cartridge access door. Look for a sheet or fragments obstructing the path. At the rear of this opening, lift the paper-path cover by its handle to reach the paper underneath. Grasp accessible jammed paper with both hands and pull it out carefully rather than yanking at one corner.

Check for torn fragments before refitting the cover. Seat it until it clicks, then close the cartridge access door and front door. Avoid touching or pulling the thin strips and other internal parts shown beside the carriage.

Step 2:Check behind and beneath the input tray

Press the two release buttons at the sides of the output tray and remove that tray. Pull the input tray fully out to inspect the feed opening and the space it occupied. Remove accessible paper or fragments, then reinstall the input tray and output tray securely.

Step 3:If an original jammed, inspect the document feeder

For a sheet fed through the scanner’s top feeder, lift the document-feeder cover and carefully remove the jammed original from the rollers. Close the cover until it latches. Lift the feeder tray to check beneath it as well, remove any remaining paper and lower the tray again.

This is the path for an original being scanned or copied. It is separate from the lower tray that supplies blank paper for printing.

Step 4:Reassemble and check before resuming

Confirm that the paper-path cover, access doors and both trays are fully seated. If you disconnected power, reconnect it and turn the printer on. Check whether the jam message clears before trying the job again. Use a flat stack of one paper type and size with the guides touching its edges without bending it.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

There is no paper in the lower tray opening.

A jam can also be in the print zone beneath the removable paper-path cover. If an original was being fed for scanning or copying, inspect the separate document feeder.

Should I turn the printer upside down to shake paper out?

No. Keep it level and use its access doors and removable trays. HP warns that turning it upside down to remove foreign material can damage it.
