A little preparation

Before you start

  • Confirm E9 on the printer. These recovery steps apply to that error, not an update that is still progressing normally.
  • For USB recovery, a compatible printer USB data cable, a Windows PC or Mac, and the firmware offered by HP for the exact model and operating system.

Step 1:Choose the available recovery route

HP identifies E9 as an interrupted firmware update. If you have no computer or suitable USB cable, switch the printer off and back on, then leave it on for about 15 minutes. If E9 remains, HP directs you to arrange the computer and cable for a firmware update.

The recording gives inconsistent unplugging and waiting instructions. Use HP’s documented restart-and-wait route; do not assume a brief restart proves recovery.

Step 2:Connect the printer to the computer by USB

Use the printer’s USB connection and a data cable that fits both devices. It is not a Thunderbolt printer socket. Keep the printer powered and connect it directly to the computer for the update. HP says this recovery can be attempted while E9 is displayed.

Step 3:Get firmware for the exact DeskJet model

Open HP Software and Driver Downloads, select Printer and enter your exact model. Confirm the detected operating system, then open the Printer Firmware section. Download and open the offered firmware update from HP.

If HP does not offer a compatible package or the utility cannot identify the printer, use HP support. Do not install a package for a different model just because its number looks similar.

Step 4:Run the update and allow the restart

In HP’s update utility select the intended printer and choose Update. Keep power and the USB connection intact throughout the update. Wait until the utility reports completion and the printer has restarted before closing the utility or disconnecting USB.

Step 5:Check E9 and a small print

Reconnect the printer to its normal network if needed. Confirm E9 has cleared, then send a small print and check the physical output. If E9 remains or the updater fails, record the message for HP support. The source supplies no completed USB-recovery test.
