A little preparation

Before you start

  • The new printer’s supplied setup cartridges and power cable, A4 plain paper and a level surface near power.
  • A compatible phone with Epson Smart Panel and your intended 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network’s current credentials. This guide follows the source’s mobile setup, followed by optional Windows installation.

Step 1:Remove transport packaging before power-on

Remove the protective wrap, transport tape and packing pieces, including those inside the scanner unit and at the rear. Keep the supplied Start Here guide available to identify packaging locations. Open the scanner unit only to its supported position.

To close it, support the unit, lift slightly and release its support at the catch, then lower it carefully. Do not copy the source’s suggestion to let it slam shut. Keep the printer level, connect the supplied power cable and switch on.

Step 2:Find the printer in Epson Smart Panel

Connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use and install the genuine Epson Smart Panel app from Epson’s support links. Open it, read the terms and allow the local-network/device-discovery permissions needed for setup. Optional notification or data-sharing choices are separate.

Choose Set up a new product, select the XP-2205/XP-2200 Series entry and continue to ink initialization. Follow the live setup prompts rather than assuming every app version uses identical screens. Epson’s Start Here guide explicitly offers Smart Panel or Setup Navi for initial setup.

Step 3:Fit all four supplied setup cartridges

Keep the printer on. When prompted, open the scanner unit with the document cover closed. Use the cartridges supplied with this printer. Gently shake the unopened black cartridge four or five times before unwrapping it; unwrap colour cartridges without shaking.

Remove only the yellow tape. Leave the transparent bottom seal and other labels intact, and do not touch the green chip or ink outlet. Put each cartridge in its matching colour position and press it down securely. Do not move the cartridge holder by hand.

Support and close the scanner unit carefully using its catch. The source proceeds to Start ink initialization in Smart Panel; begin that operation when the app confirms the cartridges are fitted.

Step 4:Wait for initial ink charging to finish

Leave the printer powered on and closed while ink initializes. Follow the app’s progress and completion message; do not interrupt charging because the printer seems busy. Initial charging uses some of the supplied ink, so the starter cartridges’ remaining yield is not the same as a full replacement set.

The app may offer Wi-Fi setup during charging. If you need to open the printer to read its administrator label, wait until charging has completed first, as the source does. Do not use the replacement-cartridge charging estimate as a promise for initial setup.

Step 5:Complete Wi-Fi setup with the correct passwords

If asked for the printer administrator password, use the current printer password. The unchanged default is on a PASSWORD label where present; Epson’s current guidance uses the serial number if no password label exists. Close the printer after reading the label.

Confirm the intended Wi-Fi network and then enter that network’s current password. This is separate from printer administrator authentication. If setup fails, check the exact network name and password before retrying. The source corrects an unsuccessful password attempt; it does not establish a guaranteed setup time.

Wait for the app’s connection-complete message and the upper router-network lamp to stay lit. See the linked Wi-Fi guide for discovery and reconnecting details.

Step 6:Load A4 plain paper properly

Open the feeder guard, extend and tilt back the rear paper support, and slide the edge guide left. Load paper upright along the right side with the printable face up, below the guide’s limit mark. Slide the edge guide against the paper, close the feeder guard and pull out the output tray.

The guide is useful for A4 as well as smaller paper. Leave it touching the edge without bending the sheets; the source’s suggestion that securing A4 is unnecessary is not adopted.

Step 7:Print the first nozzle check

When the app asks you to check print quality, follow its instructions. For the control-panel check shown, switch off with Power and wait for its light to go out. Hold Stop while switching on, then release both buttons when Power flashes. Wait for the pattern instead of repeatedly pressing buttons.

Inspect the printed line groups. If they are complete, confirm the good pattern in setup. If lines are missing, use the linked nozzle-check and cleaning guides rather than approving a poor pattern. The source reports a complete pattern; that is its first documented printer output.

Step 8:Optionally add your Windows computer

Join the computer to the same local network. Open Epson’s exact XP-2205 support page, choose the correct Windows version and install the available printer/scanner software. The source uses epson.sn/2200 → Setup, selects the discovered printer and completes its software choices.

Then select the new printer in an application’s Print dialog and send a small test document. The source shows the printer appearing in the dialog after installation; that is distinct from a completed computer print. Optional registration or subscription offers are not prerequisites for ordinary setup.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Must I leave my phone connected for future computer printing?

No. Smart Panel helps configure the router connection. The computer uses its own connection to the same local network and its installed printer software.

Can I use other cartridges for the first initialization?

Follow Epson’s initial setup and use the cartridges supplied with this printer. Replacement supplies and their regional codes are a separate later task.

Do I need to reinstall Smart Panel whenever discovery fails?

First check printer power, discovery permissions, proximity and the intended network. The source’s success after reinstalling is one experience, not a guaranteed repair or measured failure rate.
