A little preparation

Before you start

  • Keep the printer level on a firm surface. Stop the current job before checking the paper path.

Step 1:Check the warning before opening the printer

A slowly flashing paper lamp indicates a jam; a steady paper lamp can instead mean no paper or several sheets fed together. Check the message and paper first. If switching off or unplugging to inspect, use Power and wait for its light to go out before disconnecting.

Step 2:Remove paper from the feeder and output

Remove loose sheets from the rear feeder and gently ease out any trapped paper there. Check the output opening and remove visible jammed paper carefully. Do not yank it; look for torn pieces if a sheet has split.

Step 3:Check beneath the scanner unit

With the document cover closed, open the scanner unit to its supported position. Remove accessible trapped paper by hand. Do not touch the white flat cable or translucent film inside, and do not press control-panel buttons while a hand is inside the printer. Stop if the sheet is inaccessible or cannot move without force.

Step 4:Close, reload and clear the warning

Close the scanner unit carefully, keeping fingers clear. Reconnect power if it was disconnected and turn on. Reload a modest stack of flat, supported paper, upright with its printable side up, and bring the edge guide against it. Extend the output tray. Press either copy button to clear the jam warning when the path is clear.

If the paper lamp flashes quickly, about every half second, Epson identifies paper remaining inside. Its documented ejection method is to load A4 paper in portrait orientation in the rear feeder and press a copy button. If the error persists, stop and contact Epson support rather than dismantling the printer.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Why do jams keep returning?

Use flat, dry supported paper, keep the stack below the feeder limit and bring the edge guide to the paper. Try one sheet at a time if several feed together.

Should I look underneath by tipping the printer?

No. Keep it level and use the documented rear feeder, output opening and scanner-unit access.
