Before you start
- Locate the jam and read the LCD code. These instructions concern the print-paper path; an ADF original jam uses Canon’s separate 2803 procedure.
- Before switching off, finish fax sending/receiving and handle any stored faxes. Unplugging deletes every fax remaining in memory. Press Stop to cancel printing when the chosen procedure calls for shutdown.
Step 1:First check paper visible at the output or front tray
- If paper is visible at the output, grip it with both hands and draw it out slowly without tearing or forcing it.
- For paper caught at the front tray, retract the output extension and support and close the output tray to reach it. Pull the visible sheet out slowly with both hands.
- If the paper will not come out gently or it tears, stop pulling and use the relevant internal or rear procedure below. Do not insert chopsticks or other tools.
- After successful visible removal, reload correctly, open the output tray/support/extension and press OK as directed by the LCD. Check that the job resumes; resend it if it was canceled.
Canon notes that a restart can sometimes eject a stubborn visible sheet, but it is not guaranteed. Preserve pending faxes before switching off. Do not keep forcing paper while waiting for a restart to solve a deeper obstruction.
Step 2:For paper trapped inside, switch off and unplug first
- Retract the output extension and support, then open the paper output cover to inspect the internal paper path.
- Do not touch the transparent film inside. Canon’s linked internal-jam diagram identifies it.
- If paper is under the cartridge holder, hold the top of the holder and move it gently to the far right or left so you can reach the sheet. Do this only in this powered-off, unplugged procedure.
- Grip the paper with both hands and pull slowly. Check for fragments under the holder and at both sides, without probing with tools.
- Close the paper output cover and tray. Reconnect power, turn on, load paper correctly and reopen the output tray/support/extension. Resend the canceled job and check the output.
Step 3:For the rear paper path, use Canon’s supported access position
Use this branch when paper cannot be removed from the front or internal path. Canon specifically permits the following right-side-down position for this model’s rear jam access; it is not a general handling instruction for other printers.
- Finish or handle faxes, press Stop, switch off and unplug. Retract the output extension/support and close the output tray, front cover and document tray.
- On a wide, flat desk, open the document cover and carefully stand the printer with its right side facing down. Hold it firmly with both hands; use the open document cover as the support shown in Canon’s diagram. The document cover is the lid over the scanner glass, not simply the ADF feed tray.
- Keep one hand supporting the printer against tipping. Release the rear-cover catches and open the rear cover as shown in the linked Canon diagram.
- Grasp the jammed paper and draw it out slowly while continuing to support the printer. If rolled, expose its edges so you can hold them; do not reach for tools.
- Close and secure the rear cover, then return the printer to its normal upright position before reconnecting and turning it on.
- Load suitable paper, register its actual size/type and open the output tray, support and extension. Redo the canceled print job.
Check the next sheet and stop if the jam remains
Check that the next page feeds and exits without an error and that no torn fragments remain visible. Use suitable paper loaded squarely; Canon cautions that A5 sheets carrying photos or graphics can curl at the output. If the documented removal paths do not clear the fault, request Canon service rather than dismantling the printer or repeatedly forcing the mechanism.
Questions & troubleshooting
Can I use chopsticks or another tool as the video suggests?
No. The written procedure follows Canon’s gentle hand-removal paths and protects the internal film. If paper cannot be reached safely through those paths, seek service.
Which side faces down for rear access?
Canon specifies the right side down on a wide flat surface, with the open document cover used as support and a hand stabilizing the printer. Return it upright before reconnecting.
Can I push the cartridge holder while power is on?
Not in this jam procedure. Canon’s internal removal starts with shutdown and unplugging; move the holder gently by its top only if paper is underneath it.
Is this the same as an original stuck in the document feeder?
No. ADF originals use the separate 2803 procedure. Do not open the glass cover to pull a jammed ADF document.
Why did my print job disappear after recovery?
Canon says the shutdown/rear recovery cancels queued jobs. After reassembly and paper preparation, resend the document.
