A little preparation

Before you start

  • Read the jam code and location. Three orange flashes can also mean the output tray is simply closed; code 1250 needs that tray opened, not disassembly.
  • Before a procedure requiring power-off, press Stop to cancel an active print, turn the printer off normally and then unplug it. Use a wide, flat work surface.

Step 1:Start with the visible location

Code 1300 points to the output slot, 1303 to the transport unit, and 1304 to an automatic-duplex jam. Use the location that actually contains the paper; opening every cover is not itself a repair. The source illustrates access but does not show a completed jam removal/test print.

Step 2:If the sheet is visible at the output slot

  1. Hold the exposed sheet with both hands and ease it out slowly without tearing. Do not reach back to pull it through the front input tray.
  2. If it will not come out, stop pulling. Canon says switching the printer back on may eject it automatically. If the sheet still cannot be removed, cancel/power off/unplug and use the transport-unit route below.
  3. If the sheet tears and scraps remain inside, use the internal route. Once the output-slot jam is completely removed, reload suitable paper and press Black or Color to resume.
  4. If you switched the printer off, its submitted print data was cleared. Resend the job rather than expecting it to resume automatically.

Step 3:If paper is caught at the rear transport unit

  1. Cancel printing if needed, turn the printer off and unplug it. Close the document cover. Hold the machine securely with both hands and stand it on its right side on a wide, flat surface; if jammed paper is visible in the front tray, keep that tray open.
  2. Keep one hand supporting the printer. Remove any remaining transport protection, then push the transport unit’s opening lever to open the unit. Use Canon’s linked 1303 diagram to identify the lever, rather than pulling an arbitrary round part.
  3. Support the printer while gently drawing out the paper. If it is rolled up, free its edge first. If it will not come out, close the unit, return the printer upright and use the internal procedure.
  4. Close the transport unit securely and return the printer upright immediately. Reconnect power, turn it on, reload paper and resend the job.

Do not work with the printer balanced unsupported or leave it standing on its side afterwards. The source’s camera-relative left/right description is replaced by Canon’s exact orientation and lever diagram.

Step 4:If a torn sheet or fragments remain inside

  1. Cancel the print if needed, turn off and unplug the printer. Open the paper output cover and remove loose paper from the input tray.
  2. Keep clear of the transparent film running inside the machine. Canon’s internal-jam diagram marks this no-touch part; scratching or soiling it can damage the printer.
  3. If paper is trapped below the FINE cartridge holder, hold the top of the holder and slide it slowly to whichever side allows removal, only with the printer off and unplugged. This is the documented jam procedure, not permission to force a powered holder.
  4. Hold the sheet with both hands and ease it out without tearing. Check under the holder, both empty side spaces and the rest of the paper path for fragments.
  5. Close the output cover, restore the normal upright position and reload suitable paper. Reconnect power and turn on if still disconnected. Resend the cancelled job.

Check one complete page

For front-tray loading, centre a straight stack with the printable side down, insert it to the back and align the guides without bending it. Keep the stack low enough that its top does not touch the guides. Open the output tray and its support.

Print one page and check that it exits completely. If a jam message persists, check again for remaining pieces using the matching safe procedure. If you cannot remove the obstruction or the error persists after those checks, use Canon service instead of tools, casing disassembly or a reset.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Can I pull the sheet from the front paper-input tray?

Canon specifically warns against forcibly pulling jammed paper from that tray. Use the output, transport or internal route appropriate to the jam.

Must I unplug the printer for every output-slot sheet?

Canon’s visible-output procedure first describes slow removal. Before internal or transport access, cancel printing, turn off and unplug. Do not reach into a powered mechanism.

Do I need to remove screws to get inside?

No casing disassembly is part of these user jam procedures. The supporting video’s suggestion to remove screws is not adopted.

Why did my print disappear after clearing the jam?

Turning the printer off clears the submitted print data in these procedures. Reload correctly and resend the job.
