A little preparation

Before you start

  • A new drum confirmed for your exact regional printer, when its replacement is required.
  • The existing toner cartridge if it remains usable; replacing the drum does not itself require new toner.

Confirm that you are fitting a new drum

A streak alone does not establish that the drum must be replaced. Follow the printer’s drum indication or the manufacturer’s diagnosis for the actual print defect before replacing a supply.

Step 1:Remove the old assembly and keep the toner

Follow Brother’s replacement procedure with the printer on and idle. Open the front cover and remove the combined toner and drum. Press the green lock lever down to release the toner from the old drum. Hold the supplies by their intended handles and avoid the exposed drum surface.

Step 2:Fit the toner into the new drum

Unpack the correct new drum when ready to install it. Keep it away from direct sunlight and prolonged room light. Push the toner into the new drum until it locks, then guide the complete assembly back into the printer and close the front cover.

Step 3:Reset the counter after the new drum is installed

  • Keep the printer on with its front cover closed.
  • Press OK and the up-arrow button together.
  • Press OK to select Drum.
  • Select the LCD’s Reset option to reset the drum counter.

These controls are from Brother’s exact-model drum-counter instructions, not a reset shown in the recording. Do not use the Go-button sequence for a different, non-LCD model.

Step 4:Check the indication and next print

Confirm the replacement-drum warning has cleared and check the next printed page. If the message remains, verify that the new drum was actually fitted, the toner is locked into it, the cover is closed and the correct counter procedure was completed.

If a defect remains after the change, use Brother’s troubleshooting for that defect. A new drum is not a guarantee against every print-quality fault.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Should I reset the counter after taking the old drum out and putting it back?

No. Brother’s instruction is to reset only after replacement with a new drum.

Do I replace the toner as well?

Only if that cartridge needs replacement. The toner is released from the old drum and can be fitted into the new one.

The video suggests switching the power off.

The written procedure follows Brother’s drum replacement and counter instructions, which specify that the printer is on.
