A little preparation

Before you start

  • Complete the printer’s physical setup before starting. For a wireless workflow, keep the phone and printer on the intended local network; allow the permissions requested by the genuine HP app for the task.
  • Have a small document or photo to print and one original to scan. Menu names can differ from the recorded interface; account requirements depend on the feature.

Step 1:Use the genuine app and the correct printer

The phone in this recording identifies its printer as Smart Tank 5100 series. This is an app-navigation guide for that supported series, not proof that every HP printer has the same controls, supplies or features. No exact 5107 or DeskJet 4300 device is inferred from the video’s playlist.

Follow HP’s official setup/download route in the references, select your printer and use the linked app store. HP is replacing HP Smart with the HP app, but its support pages explain that availability can differ and HP Smart may still be the offered app. The source’s claim that every HP Smart listing is fake is incorrect.

Open the app and review its permission and sign-in prompts. Do not assume that creating an account is mandatory for every local task, or that every service works without one. The source’s speculation about selling user data is not a documented explanation of the permissions.

Step 2:Add or select the printer

If the printer is already set up, choose Add Device or the equivalent add-printer control, select the existing/network printer route and choose the correct discovered device. If it already appears on the app home screen, select that device rather than setting it up again.

For a genuinely new wireless setup, select the setup/new-printer route and follow the model-specific prompts. The source uses Bluetooth-assisted discovery, selects a network and enters its password, then confirms a flashing Information prompt on the printer. Those are recorded prompts, not a universal button sequence. Do not reset a working network just to explore the app.

Wait for the app to show the intended printer as ready/available before starting a task. If discovery fails, check the printer’s connection and the phone’s local-network/Bluetooth permissions as prompted, then use the specific model’s connection help. A printer nickname or a series name alone is not proof that you selected your own device.

  1. Load supported paper and open the output tray. On the app home screen select Print Documents or Print Photos, according to the file.
  2. Choose the intended file from the offered location. Grant access only as needed to select it, and check that the correct pages or image appear in the preview.
  3. Review paper size/type, orientation, colour, quality and any available crop or layout controls. Match the real loaded paper; do not assume an app setting adds a printer feature.
  4. Confirm the selected printer and choose Print. Let the sheet finish, then check the output before sending more copies.

The source shows file selection, photo adjustments and the final print controls. A temporary interface glitch in that recording is not a requirement to repeatedly tap controls or restart setup.

Step 4:Choose printer scanning and save the result

  1. Place the original face down on the scanner glass at its marked corner and close the lid. Choose Printer Scan in the app; Camera Scan uses the phone camera and does not activate the printer’s scanner.
  2. Review the available page size, colour and resolution settings, then choose Scan. Wait for the preview. If the app reports an error, read it and confirm the selected printer and connection before retrying.
  3. Inspect orientation, crop, legibility and missing edges. For another page, replace the original and use Add or the next-page control, then review page order.
  4. Choose Save or Share, enter a useful name and select PDF when you want a multipage document. Choose the offered storage destination and finish that destination’s save action.
  5. Open the saved file from its destination and check every page. Seeing a preview in the HP app alone does not confirm that a file was saved.

The source reaches scan previews and discusses PDF options. The complete save-and-check sequence above is supported by HP’s scanning instructions; it does not pretend the recording verified a saved output file. Searchable text and other advanced scan features can have different account or eligibility requirements; a normal PDF is a separate choice.

Step 5:Find status and settings without running unnecessary maintenance

The device area can show estimated supply status and entries such as Printer Status, Diagnose, Print Quality Tools or Advanced Settings. Available names and functions depend on the model and app. Estimated ink levels are planning information, not precise measurements or a reason to refill beyond the printer’s marked limit.

Use alignment or printhead cleaning only for a relevant problem and follow the model’s instructions. Finding a cleaning button is not a reason to run repeated cleaning cycles. Advanced Settings may open the printer’s own settings page and request its administrator credentials; use the information for your actual printer or its changed password, not a code visible in someone else’s video.

A Copy or Camera tile can involve the phone camera rather than the scanner. For a direct hardware copy, use the appropriate single colour or black copy control for the printer, not both together because a presenter says so. Mobile Fax is an app service, not proof that the printer contains telephone-line fax hardware.

Check that the task actually finished

  • Printing: the correct document exits the selected printer, with the intended page count and layout.
  • Scanning: the PDF or image opens from your chosen destination and contains all required pages.
  • Settings: you can return to the selected printer without having reset its network or run unrelated maintenance.

If a feature shown in the video is absent, first check your printer, platform and current app support. Do not install a lookalike app, enter credentials into an unknown destination or assume every HP device provides the same feature.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Is HP Smart always a fake app now?

No. HP is replacing HP Smart with the HP app, but availability can vary and its current guidance still offers HP Smart in some cases. Follow HP’s own download route and store links.

Does Camera Scan use the printer’s scanner?

No. Camera Scan captures with the phone camera. Choose Printer Scan to use the printer’s scanner.

Does a preview mean my PDF has been saved?

No. Complete Save or Share, choose the destination and then open the saved file to check it.

Why do I not see every feature in the recording?

Feature availability can differ by printer, platform, app release and account eligibility. This source shows a Smart Tank 5100-series device, not every HP model.

Should I run cleaning and alignment while exploring the app?

No. Use maintenance only when the printer’s symptoms and specific guidance call for it. Unnecessary cleaning consumes ink.
