A little preparation

Before you start

  • The cartridge specified for your exact HP ENVY 6120e and region, if a replacement is needed.
  • The printer powered on and accessible; plain paper if its alignment prompt requests it.
  • The HP app only if you want to check levels there instead of using the touchscreen.

Check the model and replacement first

This guide follows the HP ENVY 6120e identified in the source image. Check your model label and the supported cartridge number for your region before opening a replacement. A cartridge that looks similar or fits the holder is not proof of compatibility.

If you only want to check how much ink is left, jump to “Check estimated ink levels” below. A low estimate is useful for planning; HP’s replacement guidance considers low ink together with print quality.

Step 1:Open the access area and wait

Keep the printer on. Lift the scanner/cartridge-access assembly from the side as demonstrated until it is supported. Wait until the carriage stops moving before reaching for a cartridge; keep fingers clear while it moves.

Step 2:Press down to release the cartridge

Press down on the top of the cartridge to release it, then slide it out of its slot. Work on the cartridge that needs replacing; you do not have to replace both together. If the holder differs from the one shown, stop and check the instructions for the exact model rather than forcing it.

Step 3:Remove the tape and seat the replacement

  • Take the correct replacement out of its packaging and remove the protective tape using its pull tab. Avoid the ink nozzles and electrical contacts.
  • Match it to the labels inside the printer. The demonstration places colour on the left and black on the right.
  • Slide it into the matching slot, then push upward at an angle until it snaps into place. Repeat only for another cartridge that needs replacing.

Step 4:Close carefully, then follow any alignment prompt

Support the access assembly as you lower it; the presenter warns that it can drop suddenly. Let the printer finish its checks.

After a new cartridge is installed, HP’s instructions say the software prompts for alignment when you print a document. Follow that prompt and its page instructions. Do not expect the existing-cartridge refit in this video to show every prompt produced by a new cartridge.

Step 5:Check estimated ink levels

  • In the HP app, select this printer and view its estimated supply-level display.
  • On the demonstrated printer’s touchscreen, open Supplies to view its cartridge information and level estimates.

These indicators are estimates, not a measured quantity of liquid or a promised page count. Use the installed cartridge information to confirm that you are checking the intended printer and supplies.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

The cartridge does not click into place.

Check its exact model and regional compatibility, that the protective tape has been removed, and that it is in the labelled slot. The ENVY 6100 instructions specify an upward seating motion. Do not force a mismatched cartridge or a different holder design.

I fitted a new cartridge but did not immediately see an alignment page.

HP describes the alignment prompt appearing in its software when you print a document after installing new ink. Follow the prompt you receive. The video refits existing cartridges, so it does not establish the timing of every new-cartridge prompt.

Does a low ink estimate mean I must change both cartridges?

No. Check which cartridge is low and whether print quality is still acceptable; replace the cartridge that needs it. The estimated bars do not supply an exact remaining page count.

Can a different cartridge number work if it fits?

Physical fit is not enough. Use the supported supply information for your exact printer and region. The official HP references below explain the regional differences.
