Before you start
- The printer switched on so opening its cartridge-access door presents the cartridges.
- Damp kitchen paper, dry kitchen paper and a surface protected against ink.
- A small plastic container and water if you choose the optional soak.
- Paper for a test print; the connected HP app if you want to use the final cleaning tool.
Step 1:Open the doors and remove the affected cartridge
With the printer on, open the front door and then the inner cartridge-access door. Let the carriage move into reach and stop. To release a cartridge, place two fingers on top and pull it towards you and slightly down until it clicks out.
Remove the black cartridge if only black is missing, the tri-colour cartridge if colour is missing, or both for blank pages affecting both. The full demonstration removes both; the two supporting videos show each cartridge separately.
Step 2:Dab the printhead on damp kitchen paper
Find the small printhead area at the bottom of the cartridge, where ink comes out. Dampen kitchen paper with water; the presenter suggests it may be slightly warm. Dab the printhead against it and examine the marks. For black ink, look for a solid black line. For the tri-colour cartridge, look for three distinct, consistent colours.
Continue dabbing to remove dried ink from that area. The video also shows lifting the paper to wipe the printhead directly and using a firmer dab where needed. Keep the work over the paper so ink does not reach your table or clothes.
Step 3:If the marks remain patchy, soak only the base
For a cartridge that still does not leave consistent marks, the presenter recommends a shallow soak. Put just enough water in a small plastic container to cover the printhead at the base. Keep the rest of the cartridge, especially the electrical contacts, above the water.
In the full blank-page video, the suggested soak is about 5–10 minutes. The black-only and colour-only videos describe the same shallow-water option without giving a duration. This is an optional recommendation; the full video achieves its shown ink marks by dabbing.
Step 4:Dry the cartridges and click them back into place
After dabbing or soaking, use dry kitchen paper to dab off the water. Check that the cartridges are dry before returning them to the printer.
Keep each cartridge’s sticker facing up. Put tri-colour in the left slot and black in the right slot. Slide each loosely into position, use a finger on top for leverage, and push with your thumb until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge-access door.
Step 5:Use the HP app’s cartridge-cleaning tool if needed
If the printer is already connected in the HP app, open Print Quality Tools, then View All Print Quality Tools. Let that screen load and scroll to Cartridge Cleaning. Start with the first cleaning level and inspect its progress report. The presenter recommends proceeding to the next level only if the first has not improved the missing ink.
This final app step complements the manual procedure. If your app is not set up, you can still check the result of the manual cleaning by printing your usual document.
Step 6:Check for black text and the missing colours
Print a page containing the black text or colours that were missing. Consistent marks on kitchen paper are a useful cleaning check, but the printed page is the result that matters. Compare it with the page you printed before cleaning.
If the same areas remain blank after the cleaning and app steps, the presenter’s next recommendation is replacing the affected cartridge. Match the cartridge to your exact printer and region; this guide does not supply a universal ink number.
Questions & troubleshooting
My printer says there is ink. Why try this method?
The source addresses a cartridge that still has an ink estimate but does not put that ink on the page, especially after a period without use. Its manual method targets dried ink at the printhead; the ink estimate alone does not confirm that this is your particular cause.
Do I have to soak every cartridge?
No. In these recordings, soaking is the next option if dabbing does not produce consistent ink marks. The full blank-page video recommends about 5–10 minutes with only the printhead base in shallow water.
Which supporting video should I watch?
Use the black-ink video if only black is missing, or the colour video for the tri-colour cartridge. The main video covers both together.
