A little preparation

Before you start

  • A Windows 11 computer with the intended printer entry identified.
  • Administrator permission if Windows requests it, and internet access for an online download.

Identify the printer and the task

A Windows driver runs on the computer; printer firmware runs on the printer. This guide concerns the Windows driver. First confirm the intended HL-L2445DW in Printers & scanners and check its connection if the problem is printing.

The source shows driver-search options; it does not demonstrate that an updated driver was found. Do not remove a working printer merely to force a new version. Microsoft recommends Windows Update for driver updates.

Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the relevant printer category; the source’s printer appears under Print queues. Right-click the HL-L2445DW entry, choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.

Read the result. If Windows installs a driver, complete any restart it requests. If it reports that the best driver is already installed, no new installation has been established. Windows may offer a link to search Windows Update.

Step 2:Use the exact Brother download if needed

Open Brother’s HL-L2445DW Downloads page linked below and select your actual Windows version and architecture. Read that package’s installation instructions. Some downloads are installers; do not assume that every Brother download is a ZIP file to browse manually.

If the official instructions supply an extracted driver folder for manual installation, return to Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers, browse to that folder, check the selected path and choose Next. Otherwise run the official package as instructed.

Step 3:Check the result with the intended printer

Finish the installer and any requested restart, then confirm the HL-L2445DW remains available in Printers & scanners. Send a small document to that entry and check the actual output. A successful driver dialog alone does not rule out a separate paper, toner or network fault.

Removing a device can leave it unavailable until reinstalled. The source discusses removal, but it is not required for the normal update path above. If needed for a diagnosed problem, follow Microsoft’s reinstall instructions rather than assuming hardware scanning always completes it.

A little extra help

Questions & troubleshooting

Windows says the best driver is already installed.

That is a search result, not evidence of a new installation. Check Windows Update or the exact Brother Downloads page if a particular fix or feature is needed.

The package is an installer, not a folder of drivers.

Follow the package’s own instructions. The Device Manager Browse method is for suitable driver files; it is not a universal way to run every software package.

Does this update printer firmware?

No. Firmware is a separate printer update. Do not treat the Windows driver version as the printer’s firmware version.

Must I uninstall the printer first?

Not for this normal update path. Removal changes the computer’s device setup and may require manual reinstallation.
